Rochester Is OK

Went to check on Rochester- everything is fine. there is a nice road with a nice sign pointing the right direction for explorers. The only noticeable change was the road to Upper Rochester is now fenced and locked. Otherwise, things are just as we left them. Updated the page with new info and photos, and am working on the New Humboldt City page as well.

Since Old Man Winter has taken a vacation, we're going to use this Sunday to check out rumors that the Coeur Rochester Mine has seen fit to post security guards and has bulldozed Lower Rochester in an effort to discourage visitors. Belmont Mine Cleanup

Beginning August 16, 2011 until November 30, 2011. The Belmont Mine is about 46 miles NE of Tonopah and about 20 miles west of Ely. Construction and stabilization of the mill structure, tramway towers, assay office, and supervisor's house has begun and the public is asked to stay out of the area. Access roads to the site will be temporarily closed as construction continues.

Closures include County 9/FS 59623 between the intersection of FS 59624 (road to Hamilton, NV) and the northern intersection of FS 19543. It also includes FS 19542, FS 19594, and FS 59498 from FS 59623 to FS 59624.

Work includes replacing broken or severely weathered structural members, placement of concrete footings, and the addition of structural elements to keep the buildings standing for another 30 to 50 years. Mined material that may be toxic will be cleaned up an properly disposed.

I'm a teacher with Pine Mountain School District in California and this is my first year doing the summer program :)
In May we started a program which teaches our kids how to effectively use the internet for research while avoiding inappropriate content and if/when they do find that content we teach them how to deal with it. Your links page was one that the kids found and added it to our classroom bookmarks! We use it often :)

Mine Tour

Aye Carumba, it's been a while. We're still planning a trip to Jefferson, probably in the Fall.

In the mean time, however, we managed to sneak onto an underground tour of the Newmont Exodus Mine near Carlin, Nevada. Absolutely awesome. It was like a parking garage down there, just huge- remote control loaders, drilling machines that can drill 9 foot holes in just ten or fifteen seconds. This is some serious mining. These guys are moving some serious rock.

You know when you have your own power plant that you're a few steps above a prospector and a mule. Here is a video of the remote control loader demonstration. Keep in mind it's dark down there....

One of the cool things we were able to do this trip was bring a lap top and a copy of USA PHOTO MAPS by Mr. Doug Cox. On it, we can watch our progress and position in real time on a USGS map or a satellite view and know exactly where we are at all times. Very handy.

Jefferson was great. Had to do some hiking with the snowy, sloppy roads and only one Jeep, but we are definitely making a summer trip. Lots of ruins and things to see out there.

Got the jack

OK, so if we have it, we won't need it, right?

I used some chain link fence hardware to bolt the jack to the roll bars. Since I don't feel much like going to the hardware store again, I just wrapped a little cork around the handle and tie wrapped it together so it doesn't rattle. Yeah, I got something to cut the tie wraps, but Luis's teeth seem sharp enough. Had to stare the base and cotter pin separately since it wouldn't fit between the roll bar and the back of the hard top with the base on.

The road to Jefferson actually looks fairly decent (from space) so we probably won't even get our shoes dirty.

Here is another company promising Magical Performance Gains! G-Force Performance Chips has a chip for every car you can imagine, from the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 down to the Hudson Hornet. Yeah, you read right. And you know how sensitive the on-board computers were for those Hudsons.

This company out of Irvine, California has a replacement computer chip that will increase my mileage by 3-4 miles per gallon. How do I know this?

Have they tested it with a Jeep similar to mine? Do they have dynamometer readings to prove it? Do they have any charts or graphs to document this 17% gas mileage increase?

No. What we have is the personal guarantee of Terry, The Sales Manager. Terry told me that I would get "30-35 more horsepower and 3-4 miles per gallon." I'm assuming he meant "more miles per gallon." Anyway, when asked for documented test results, he replied, "The 3-4 MPG is guaranteed, and you will see this."

OK Terry, that's good enough for me!

Marketing ploys

When I first got the Jeep, the first thing several people said to me was, "Boy, you've got to get a cold air intake for that thing!" So naturally, I started investigating these devices. Basically, it's a hose with an air-cleaner on it, and the "secret" is that it supposedly draws colder air, which is more dense and has more oxygen.

The truth seems to be that since the air cleaner is no longer situated in the air box, but exposed, the sound of air rushing into the engine is louder, and people equate "loud" with "more power."

The testimonials for these things are like, "Oh yeah, I can feel the extra power!" to "Yeah, I'm getting more miles per tank than I did before!" But no actual facts. Keep in mind that they charge $200 or $300 for what you see in the photo- a tube, a bracket, and a K&N air filter.

So being the troublemaker I am, I make some inquires. Simply put, I asked,

"Do you have any test results that show an improvement in power and mileage on a vehicle similar to mine?"

While some of the companies are podunk outfits operating out of storage units and vans, others are name-brand companies like K&N and Banks.

So far, only K&N was able to supply actual test results. Those results showed negligible differences in power and torque until some pretty extreme RPM levels are reached. I can tell you that you will be spending almost 100% of your time below 2,000 RPM, and the gains don't really begin until you're at 3,500 RPM. No mention of an increase in mileage at all. So, clearly, for the type of driving that I do, this product would be a waste of money.

Other companies did not provide results. Banks, for instance, which is a large, well-known manufacturer, merely attached a copy of their ad. No test results. Since the design of these things is all basically the same, I think we can assume the results are, too. After all, you can push as much air as you want, but the stoichiometric ratio is going to remain the same-- unless you have a turbo pushing more mixture into the cylinder, or remove a restriction which will then allow the engine to suck more mixture into the cylinder, you won't make a difference.

If you're going to claim that you're now sucking colder, more oxygen-rich air, well folks, you're going to have to show me the temperature difference and the amount of extra oxygen which results. You're also going to have to show me that it's worth $300.

Of course, we all know they DON'T have to show me. Due to the number of people out there offering such devices, it must be a very lucrative market.

Where Oh Where To Ride?

If you're like us, you're always looking for a new place to ride. Seems like we've ridden just about everywhere, but we know we haven't even begun to scratch the surface. Thank goodness with our new ATV registration coming on line, the Government will be creating and maintaining a bunch of new riding trails for us.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. That was a joke.

Anyway....

As unbelievable as it sounds, there are folks out there who do not live by our motto, "Exploring Nevada So You Don't Have To™." They risk their lives and limbs by climbing on their quads or into their 4WD's and combing the hills and valleys of Nevada on their own. The ones that make it back alive are submitting their trips to a nifty little website called Offroading Home.

You can go there and find all sorts GPS tracks and waypoints from tried and true trails you probably haven't been on, all plugged in to Google Earth maps. There's lots of other information on the trails, too, so you don't get surprised by locked gates and fences, tiger dens, or trails you're just too much of a sissy to ride.

It's even run by a guy named "Bob" so you know it's gotta be good.

No fees, no costs, no "joining," no special software. Just pick a place and get yourself some waypoints for rides in Utah, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, and yes, even California. You can even upload your GPS tracks from your favorite trip to share with everyone.

Pretty neat.

Just read the story about the poor German family whose bones were recently found in Death Valley. Apparently they were boonie-hopping in a - yeah, you guessed it- a Dodge minivan, when they ran out of road. They decided to keep going though, even though their tires were shredded. Although there were plenty of springs nearby, it is Death Valley and it was July and there was probably no water to be had. Why you'd go off road in Death Valley in a minivan with children in July is beyond me.

Nice little museum they're running here. It could use some more signage, but they've done a lot of work and just about every aspect of a mining operation is here for you to look up and get up close to. Lots of stuffin good condition and this is a big important mine, here, not just the Tony's Knob Silver Mine. They yanked a lot of silver out of the ground here.

While you were working today, Luis and I hit the Bobcat OHV Trail, and we hit it hard.

If you're gonna hit it, here are some things you should know. If you're coming from the west side, be advised that about 2 miles in, the BLM sign points right to Poco Canyon. You actually want to go left, up West Job Canyon.

But actually, you want to follow the sign, and take a ride up Poco Canyon. We did, and we were rewarded by a trip down Big Box Canyon. Then, back up the trail heading north, to connect with the trail in East Job Canyon. Continue east at great personal peril. You're now in Dixie Valley, where the possibilities are limitless. Return east, but instead of retracing your route, turn right at the microwave station or repeater or whatever it is. Follow West Job Canyon into Lahnontan Valley, as God intended.

Please don't bring your Mom's minivan.

Steve Update

No doubt you will remember Steve from Dead Man's Hill. We returned today to check the status of Steve's pickup. It's not good.

Apparently, either Steve grew a set (a really, really large set) and attempted to drive down the hill, or some miscreants out for a thrill decided to help gravity along. Steve's pickup is now halfway down Dead Man's Hill. We didn't get very close, because it was a warm day and we're too lazy to climb the 45 degree incline to inspect the damage, but what seems to have happened is miscreants tried rolling the truck down hill. It went over a small cliff-- more like a shelf-- and then landed right side up wedged by a rock.

I took a crummy picture with my cell phone which may give you some idea of where Steve's truck landed, but don't expect much.

Here is the latest from the DMV website on ATV registration:

The 2009 Nevada Legislature passed Senate Bill 394 that requires registration and titling of off-highway vehicles if certain conditions are met. SB 394 sets up a revolving account to help fund the DMV's startup costs.

If the revolving fund reaches $500,000 by July 1, 2011, the Interim Finance Committee will notify the DMV. Registration and titling of off-highway vehicles will begin 1 year later. If the revolving fund does not reach $500,000 by 7/1/11, the changes to the statutes expire and the program will not be implemented.

SB 394 also requires the Governor to form a new Commission on Off-Highway Vehicles by July 1, 2010.

The first picture is of the destroyed ball joint; in it you can see the joint but the ball is suspicious in its absence. Looking inside the joint in the next picture, you can see where it's worn out one side almost to the edge, enlarging the hole and allowing the ball to escape at the most inopportune moment. And finally, a new ball joint sits inserted, terrified of the abuse about to come.

In replacing all four ball joints, we found another one ready to go, and one more questionable. This is after about 3500 miles, albeit hard miles.

Why I Keep My Thirty-Two Year Old Car

Know why I keep my 23-year old car? Simple. My 2004 Jeep's A/C fan switch stopped working. Only works on high, which is indicative of the fan blower motor resistor failing. With parts, a twenty minute fix. Jeep quoted me $424.46 to fix it-- resistor $160.80, the wiring connector which probably melted is $96.80 with labor at $148.50.

I don't want to replace the entire air conditioner, just the stupid resistor. I'll hard wire the bastard in with a soldering iron instead of paying a hundred bucks for a stupid connector, but come on, fellows. You pull out the damn glove box, uncork the part, slap in another one, and you're done. $150 labor? For what? $160 for a damn resistor mounted on a piece of plastic? Which shouldn't have gone out in the first place?

Yeah, I think I'll just keep my old car.

Death Defied

The trip out to Peavine Canyon, Manhattan, San Antonio Ranch / Smelter, White Cap, and environs was a glorious outing, for the most part. We even came that close to crossing paths with the Ghost Town God himself, Stanley Paher, who was out visiting (or due to visit later that afternoon) White Cap. But it was not to be.

First, we ran across a scorpion the size of a house cat while loading up Luis. Hmmmmm. We stopped at Jerry's in Fallon for a quick breakfast and toddled off to our campground in Peavine Canyon south of Austin. Way south. Scouting around for the ideal site, we came across a rattlesnake. Good feeling. Hopped on the quads and went up the canyon, but couldn't get to the cabins- it's closed as a wilderness area. Not a problem, we explored several other canyons and headed south to take a look at the San Antonio Smelter site and the now abandoned San Antonio Ranch. Steaks and spuds over the campfire that night, and just enough beer to cut the road dust. A very pleasant campground. We had company but the were quiet and respectful.

The next day we headed to Manhattan. We cruised through town knowing we could come back that afternoon to get some pictures. We circled around behind to the south and popped up in White Cap, very impressive ruins and buildings. A group whose name I can't quite recall "Great Basin Explorers"? who were also camped at Peavine were there in force, milling about. Very pleasant people. We understood that Stanley Paher was due that afternoon to give them a little tour or some such, and that possibly even Shawn Hall was in the neighborhood. None of the group realized how famous we were, and treated us like regular human beings.

Then we decided to head up to take a look at a historic site already erased from my brain, because as I was rounding a curve on the way down, a ball joint decided this would be a good time to separate and try to kill me. That was annoying. Very, very annoying.

Thankfully, I always bring several pounds of tie wraps, and after one false start, The Ramirez Brothers had rigged my ATV to be towed by Luis's Polaris, and off we went down 10 miles of Slaughterhouse Canyon to the waiting arms of the trailer. Oddly enough, we made it in one piece, with me sitting on the extreme right rear of the luggage rack to take weight off the crippled wheel, sucking Luis's exhaust fumes and fine powdery sand the whole way down.

I see now that Arctic Cat recalled 2002 models for defective ball joints, but it would seem the model run began about ten minutes after they stopped making mine. We'll see what kind of a company Arctic Cat is by their response to my inquiry about taking care of this problem, which, quite literally, could have killed me.

So. Almost killed by scorpions and snakes. Missed Stanley Paher by that much. Nearly killed by a defective quad.

All in all, an excellent trip.

Yes, that's right, we simply don't purchase MRE's, heaters, entrees, or any other military or military-inspired foodstuffs from anyone else. Just this morning, I looked up comments on AB413, an atrocious piece of crap written by the astoundingly ignorant Democrat Senator Jerry Claborn from down Las Vegas way.This transplanted hillbilly wants to do away with the Electoral College because he doesn't understand how it works. Or worse, he does understand how it works and wants no part of the protections the Founding Fathers placed into the system. Anyway, it's pretty interesting to read the comments regarding the depths of his ignorance.

Speaking of opinions, there's one opinion in favor of AB394, the Let's-Be-Like-The-Other-States-And-Register-OHV's bill. This person is quivering with excitement about all the trails they're going to build. Sheesh.

I was thinking, if in fact this bill does get rammed down our throats, how cool would it be to actually start DEMANDING all the things they said they were going to provide? I want all trails in Nevada to be marked with reflective mile markers, personally. Rest stops with facilities would be nice.
